FAQ - Pioneer Division (Ages 7-8)

Posted by Lew Lee on Dec 22 2013 at 04:00PM PST in MVLL Baseball 2019

The Mountain View Little League Pioneer Division is for players 7-8 years of age (birthdate as of April 30 during the year of Spring baseball). T-Ball players progress to the Pioneer Division. Exceptional 6 year-olds may "play up" to this division. Players will bat at pitches delivered by a pitching machine withball speeds at 35-40mph.  In the second half of the season, pitches will be thrown by the team manager or coach.

There are no tryouts (player assessment). The division director forms the teams. At registration, players can submit requests to be placed on teams with friends and coacht-es. The division director will attempt to accommodate buddy requests.

While games are more competitive than in T-Ball, no scores or standings are kept. Games are played with 10 fielders (there are 4 outfielders).  Although players may not play a defensive position in each inning, the players bat in a continuous batting order. Pioneer Division prepares players to move up to the Minors Division. Players are taught correct throwing techniques, fielding ground balls and fly balls. Players learn to hit a faster-moving baseball and they learn base running fundamentals.

To move to the next level of play, players should be able to throw a ball across the 60-foot baseline diamond, catch a thrown ball, hit a moving baseball and know the basics of where to play in each position.
